Seamanship Trophy

The purpose of the logs is to both entertain and inform other cruising members of interesting places to go and sights to see.

Listed below are criteria to be used as a guide in the preparation of logs for the above categories.  The logs should contain:

  • A narrative which should include pilotage and weather information.
  • Relevant photographs
  • A Track Chart
  • Chartlets of Anchorages/small Ports
  • Some Navigational Information
  • A Description of the Boat + background of the Crew

In addition, the cruise described in the log should be recent and should be supplied in electronic form as well as a hard copy.

XII BAR BLUES TROPHY

This trophy was donated in 2009 by John and Sally Priestley.

Objective.

To encourage and reward the use of modern technologies in the production of cruising logs. The intention is to appeal to a wider and, perhaps, younger audience and to recognise that the formality of the traditional yacht's log fits less well with modern on-board routines. Compared with a traditional log, a "blog" (weblog) or website offers the following benefits:-
Allows multi-media including, for example, video and sound
Easy to include links to other material thus emphasising editing as well as writing skills
Easy to distribute to potential readers
Use of a less formal structure and modern tools should increase the appeal to younger members and their  families
Can be built up as a cruise progresses and shared as the cruise develops

Method.

Members compiling blogs or publishing completed blog accounts should contact the Captain of Cruising, who will arrange for them to be linked to the Cruising Blogs section of this website. A suitable website for posting such blogs could be the US-Based SailBlogs - http://www.sailblogs.com/. It should be clear that members are entirely responsible for the content of the website they use and they may wish to consider restricting access

Entries may be a "running" blog built up as the cruise develops through the season OR created at the end of the cruise/season.

Criteria

Informative, entertaining and interesting!

Narrative should include details of:

o Boat & Crew
o Passages & Ports
o Track charts and navigation information (probably through links)

Sensible exploitation of the technology, for example the ability to include:

o links to other relevant sites and material
o photography
o video and sound etc

Judging and Communication.

The judging for the award of the XII Bar Blues Trophy will be conducted by the judges for the Club's Cruising logs and will be done as part of that process. The trophy will be presented with the other cruising trophies, usually at the Cruising Dinner.

Finally, if anyone has any queries about the criteria for the award of this trophy please contact the Captain of Cruising.
