About the Club

Kevin Podger, Secretary writes:

I am delighted to welcome you to the Royal Lymington Yacht Club web site, which I hope you find useful and informative. Located at the western end of the Solent, the Royal Lymington Yacht Club began its life in 1922 as the Lymington River Sailing Club. It quickly gained strength and in 1924 found a home in a disused boathouse beside the River.  This original structure  remains, just, as the southern wing of today's expanded premises, commanding an outstanding view down the Lymington River, across the Solent to the Isle of Wight. The membership has grown from the original 85 to around 2,600.

"Successful on the water, friendly and welcoming ashore", the Club's objectives are to encourage and promote yachting in all its aspects, and to maintain a clubhouse and other facilities for the use of members and visiting yachtsmen.   The emphasis of the Club is very much on the practical enjoyment of sailing and motor-boating, to which the extensive racing and social programme is an adjunct.  We are proud of our Wednesday Junior Sailing (WJS) programme and our nationally and internationally successful fleets of Optimists, Cadets, Lasers, 420s and 470s. We are also delighted that three of our Club Members won medals at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing.  Our keel-boats compete at National level and we are regular prize winners in individual classes at Cowes week and in the Round the Island Race.

The Club is also justly proud of its family atmosphere, and of the high sea-going standards set and maintained by its members over the years.  The Club is honoured to have as Patron Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal, who visited us in the summer 2009 to help us celebrate the 25th anniversary of WJS.

Members of reciprocal clubs and of other RYA recognised clubs whilst sailing in the West Solent are welcome to make use of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club bar and restaurant facilities.  If visiting on a Friday or Saturday and wishing to dine, it is recommended that you book a table in advance (House Manager - Tel: 01590 671751)

We do hope that you have found your visit to our web site informative and enjoyable.  The Club welcomes visiting sailors, sail and power, from RYA-recognised clubs.  Regrettably, because of our limited space, we can seldom offer berthing (for which contact the Harbour Master or one of the marinas), but you are most welcome in our bar, which overlooks the River, and our catering is first class.  In particular we welcome membership enquiries from those active in sailing, again sail or power.  If you have an interest in membership do, please, come and see us.  We will explain the membership process and will be delighted to show you around the Clubhouse and its facilities.  If you require further information please telephone us on 01590 672677 or click here to contact the Office.

We look forward to meeting you.
