Message from Sebastian

The Scow division is much looking forward to a fairly hectic sailing season which includes hosting the annual National Championships. By no means has it lain dormant over the last few months however, although it is fair to say that most boats have been safely wrapped up and not ventured out over the winter.

We had an excellent turnout for the AGM and dinner in November followed by another very good number enjoying the roast partridge that Fergal gave us for the Christmas Cheer supper. Instead of a table plan ( the usual nightmare for  organisers) members drew tickets for their seats on entering the dining room. It is an excellent way of getting to know other members of the division that much better and with the gentlemen moving two places to their right after the first course the ladies were spoilt for choice!

When the Thursday morning Potters finished at the end of October the Thursday Walks began. As with the Potters Dick Thorn has once again come up trumps, getting members to lead us all around the Forest and to some delightful hostelries. From walks along the sea wall, with Chris Willard giving us a wonderful chance to get to know what the birds that we were looking at actually were, to George and Julia Trevelyan taking us North of the A31 for a wonderful walk around Amberwood Inclosure and Fritham Plain, members have had plenty of fresh air, good exercise and the best of company.

We have enjoyed four excellent lectures followed by Fergal's splendid Scow Suppers. George Trevelyan
entertained us with some marvellous photographs and a talk about the English Raid that he organised last year.
Richard Newsom, following last year's wonderful talk about his time in a Mercy Ship on the west Coast of Africa, kindly returned to tell us about his visit to Gaza, with other eye surgeons, to try and improve the lot of the Palestinian eye surgeons trying to treat their fellow countrymen under incredibly difficult conditions. We actually managed to persuade Hugh Marriott to come and tell us about his motorbicycle ride to Petra and back with Roo. A hugely entertaining evening and we were delighted to welcome quite a few club members who are not members of the division.
Finally, with the first Monday night race fast approaching, Mike Urwin took time off to take us through the racing rules and remind us all that we are out there to have fun and that if we do infringe them then it is much better to do that 360 rather than be disqualified. With Mike doing the talking it was a far from dry subject! We are so grateful to all four lecturers for their time and support.

As I write this we are looking forward to those last few walks and the Spring Back to Scowing supper before once more getting back on the water. I wish everyone a very happy and successful new season.
